Protesting women blame collapsed bridge for gridlock around Warri Refinery

Tens of women from Ifie-Ikporo, Aja-Etan, Ubeji and two other communities hosting the Warri Refining and Petro Chemicals Company, WRPC today (August 6, 2014) marched to the Warri South Local Government Council Secretariat, calling on the relevant government agencies to fix the collapsed bridge linking Ifie-Kporo to Warri urban.

The women who stormed the Warri South Council Secretariat in two buses at about 2:30pm, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “ remove the batch from the bridge”, “government come to our aid”, blamed the gridlock at Shagwolor near the Warri Refining and Petro Chemicals Company, WRPC on the abandonment of the bridge which they said collapsed over two years ago.

The women who were later granted audience by a management staff of Warri South Local Government Council, said they can no longer carry out fishing and other commercial activities at Ifie-Kporo River due to the collapsed bridge which has an abandoned batch resting on it.
