The Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has called on the Federal Government to immortalize the late Dr. Stella Ameyo Adadevoh, who sacrificed her life to save Nigeria from the deadly Ebola Virus scourge.
Senator Okowa made the call recently, while speaking at the floor of the Red Chambers of the National Assembly during plenary in Abuja.
He maintained that the call became imperative considering the exceptional display of bravery and patriotism by the Adadevo, who single handedly stopped late Patrick Sawyer from leaving his hospital bed, an action he said should be applauded by all Nigerians.
The lawmaker who represents Delta North in the Upper Chambers, noted that, "that singular and courageous action of this great Amazon was what saved our dear nation and her citizens from what would have turned catastrophic, adding that, “if Dr. Adadevoh had not shown such great courage and patriotism, Nigeria would have been battling with a much wider scope of the deadly disease”.
The Senate Committee chairman, while giving a historical perspective on the Ebola pandemic, described the late Dr. Stella Adadevoh as a gallant woman who would forever be appreciated and remembered.
While commending health workers, who he observed as being more vulnerable to the Ebola Virus, as a result of their close contacts with patients, Senator Okowa praised the Federal Government for its quick intervention in halting the spread of the disease. “I must sincerely commend President Goodluck Jonathan for the immediate proactive action and measures taken to tackle the disease. To the relieve of Nigerians, the spread of the Ebola virus was quickly contained”.
He however, called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and guard against actions and activities that could endanger their lives, even as he advised on the need for good personal hygiene practices, such as regular washing of hands.
