(Act 1) Scene 1
Papa: Ify!
Ifeoma: Papa!
Papa: Please come along with your mother.
Ifeoma: Alright papa. Mama papa is calling us.
Mama: Alright dear.
Mama: Eeniye, you called us.
Papa: Yes I did. I want to discuss the issue of Ifeoma not being married and I want you to hear it. Looking at Ifeoma, he said, Ifeoma you are old enough to be married, your mates are married and you are not. You are free to choose your husband yourself without us forcing you, so why don’t you get married?
Mama: Eeniye, you should understand that our daughter is waiting for the right time. So don’t force her.
Papa: Will you shut up! I’m not forcing her to get married. I’m only advising her on what to do.
Ifeoma: Papa, I’ve heard all you’ve said. I already found a man who I want to marry. His name is Okon Okonkwo.
Mama: You mean the son of that poor palm-wine tapper. Over my dead body! You will never marry him.
Ifeoma: But mama he loves me and I love him. (Crying)
Papa: My daughter stop crying don’t mind your mother, okay.
Mama: Papa Ifeoma you’re supporting her abi! Okay it has now come to this? you’re supporting your daughter’s biggest mistake of her life.
Papa: Mama Ifeoma if you want to call it the worst decision our daughter has ever made so be it. As far as I’m concerned, if she wants to marry him, she can. (Turn to Ifeoma) My dear you can marry Okon.
Ifeoma: Oh! Thank you so much papa may our ancestors bless you.
Mama: See, Papa Ifeoma your plan will not work if you want my daughter to suffer poverty it will not work.
FADE OUT!
PART 2
Ifeoma and the witch.
Ify&Okon: Thank you Papa, for blessing us.
Papa: My children God bless you!
Ify&Okon: Amen Papa (later, they had gone to their matrimonial home when Patricia, Ify’s mother goes to a chief priest)
Mama: Baba I need a charm that will separate my daughter from that bastard son of Okon.
Baba: You have come to the right place woman. (Recites incantations) here take this (he gives her a small cowry.) put it under her pillow and when she wakes up she will pack out.
Patricia: Thank you Baba, I’ll do exactly as you said. (Three weeks after she goes to stay with them)
Patricia: Ifeoma (x3) as I call you this night you will leave your husband. (And puts it under Ify’s husband pillow.)
Ifeoma: (Saying her prayers) O lord, thank you for today as I sleep now guide and protect us in Jesus name Amen.
The next morning…
Patricia: Jesus oh! Someone help me oh!
Ifeoma: Ah! Mama what is it, you’re looking frightened! What is this sore on your leg eh?
Patricia: My daughter please forgive me oh…..! I wanted to separate you from Okon, so I went to a babalawo’s house. He gave me a charm and told me to put it under your pillow but I accidentally put it under your husband’s pillow and it backfired on me. Please forgive me, help me I beg of you.
Ifeoma: Mama so you came to my house to separate me from my husband ehen! Okay I forgive you but you will leave my house first thing tomorrow morning.
Patricia: Ah! My daughter please forgive me.
Okon: What is happening here? Honey, why are you angry? And why is mama on the floor? She smells.
Ifeoma: My dear can you imagine my own mother used a charm to try and separate us.
Okon: Jesus! So she came here to separate us.
Ifeoma: Yes oh! In fact she confessed just now, so I asked her to leave first thing tomorrow morning.
Okon: That is very good
Patricia: Wailing and crying out in pains loudly, my leg ohhh..
Okon: Can you imagine?
Ifeoma: I can’t believe it.
The next day Ifeoma’s friend Christy came to visit her.
Ifeoma: (Narrate everything that happened the previous day and summarize with). So that is it my dear.
Christy: hmm…! Your own mother could do that, it is very shameful of her.
Ifeoma: I’m telling you Christy it’s very unfortunate of her. Can you imagine my own mother? Do old people not have fear of God again?
Christy: I don’t know my dear! I don’t know. (Stop discussion) Anyway I want to discuss something else with you.
Ifeoma: And what might that be my friend?
Christy: You know we are friends and I don’t want to hurt you but I’m curious what is your husband’s name? Where does he come from? What is his occupation?
Ifeoma: (Looking at her suspiciously) why do you need these information about my husband?
Christy: Well! I just want to know because he looks familiar to me.
Ifeoma: Alright then! I will tell you, his name is Okon Nwakeze Okonkwo. He hails from Ankwaze Village, Ibori town, Kokori. He is an accountant working in a Micro Finance Bank.
Christy: Meditates on the information
Ifeoma: Are you alright?
Christy: Yeah I’m okay. But em! Did you say Okon?
Ifeoma: Yes you heard me right.
Christy: I’ll be on my way now.
Ifeoma: Before I forget, my mother died last week.
Christy: Ah! That’s so sad. When is the burial?
Ifeoma: Next month, June 3rd. Please do come, I need all the support I can get from friends.
Christy: I’ll try to make it, bye dear.
Ifeoma: Bye -bye my sister.
As Christy leaves she meditates on Okon’s name and had flashback for a few minutes
Christy: Eh-heh! Nwakeze so you cheated me. Don’t worry I’ll get you.
She goes to visit a babalawo
Christy: Baba I want a charm to win my ex-fiancé back from my friend.
Baba: What is the name of the woman?
Christy: Ezebukowaye Chinenye Ifeoma.
Baba: Okay (recite incantations) take this (a small waist band) give it to her to wear on her waist, tell her to wear it for three days. Tell her it will protect her from evil spirits. Once it completes three days her husband will come back to you.
Christy: Thank you Baba! (Goes to Ify’s house)
Ifeoma: Christy baby, how far?
Christy: Ify baby, I have news for you.
Ifeoma: Christy, spill out the info.
Christy: I went to Baba Segun, a strong witch doctor, he told me he had a vision about you. He saw some evil spirits chasing you so he gave me this waist band and said you should wear it for three days as it will chase the evil spirits away.
Ifeoma: Ah! But I don’t believe in such things.
Christy: Eeeh! I know, just wear it for your own good or do you want the spirit to posses you?
Ifeoma: No oh! Okay give it to me, I’ll wear it before I sleep.
Christy: Eh.heh! Now you are talking, any way I’ll be on my way now.
Ifeoma: Okay bye-bye (she has thoughts in her mind: Ha-waw! This woman has given me a charm when she knows I only believe in God. Any ways I’ll do as she said)
Okon: Honey I’m home!
Ifeoma: Ah dear you are back so soon.
Okon: My dear it was early but hectic I’m really exhausted.
Ifeoma: I knew you would say that so I prepared lunch and I want you to have your bath first and eat. I want to discuss something with you.
Okon: Honey, I hope there’s no problem?
Ifeoma: None at all just to discuss something slightly important with you. (In the bedroom they discussed.)
Ifeoma: Dear, you know I tell you everything because you’re my companion for life.
Okon: Honey, I don’t understand what you’re saying I hope there is no problems?
Ifeoma: Dear, why I’m saying this is because Christy my friend told me that a witch doctor saw a vision about me that evil spirits were chasing me, and gave her a waistband for me to wear for three days, so that the evil spirits in the vision will stop chasing me.
Okon: So your point is?
Ifeoma: My point is …I don’t know how to say this, I …… I…..I….. I want a divorce.
Okon: What! You can’t be serious or don’t tell me you are serious?
Ifeoma: I’m serious (crying) I’m afraid that if anything happens to me, I don’t want you to bear the consequences, therefore I’m sacrificing our marriage for it.
Okon: But Ify! After 2years we haven’t had children, you can’t walk out now, it’s too early.
Ifeoma: Okon my love! I love you and I’ll continue loving you but because of this I have to leave. I’m leaving first thing tomorrow morning.
Okon: Alright since I can’t do anything to stop you, you’re free to go.
Ifeoma: Shedding tears, she goes to sleep.
Blackout… the next day Ifeoma narrate the dream she had to her husband
I had a dream about a black dark figure standing in front of a dark bright figure and telling a woman that she doesn’t need to leave her marriage.
Okon: Ify, what do you think that means?
Ifeoma: The dream, a white figure told a woman that she doesn’t not need to leave her husband anymore which means I don’t need to leave the marriage (excited)
Okon: So honey, you are not leaving the marriage.
Ifeoma: No am not dear, I’m happy too.
Three days later
Christy: Please, someone help me! (Wailing and crying)
Ifeoma: Ah! Christy what is it? Why are crying and you have sores all over your body.
Christy: Ifeoma! Please forgive me. I was the cause of everything.
Ifeoma: What exactly do you mean?
Christy: I mean that I was the cause of you trying to leave your husband, but when you didn’t leave, the charm backfires on me. The witch doctor said that I can only be healed if you forgive me. So please forgive me.
Ifeoma: But why would you want to take my husband away from me?
Christy: Before Okon married you, he and I were dating and we loved each other very much. We were are about to get married in three weeks, when he said he wants to travel to Abuja and since then he has never called me, he only texted me to call off the marriage. I tried calling him he wouldn’t pick up. So I texted him to know why the marriage was called off. He said he does not know. Not knowing he met you and married you. It was months later when I came to Abuja because of my job interview where I met you, we became friends, you took me to your house where I saw your wedding pictures with Okon who is my ex-fiancé and tried to take him back.
Ifeoma: And the only way was to use a charm to snatch him away.
Christy: Yes, I’m sorry.
Ifeoma: I forgive you (but it was too late she turned to dust before her two eyes.) she was gone.
Okon enters and says…..
Okon: Honey, I’m home.
Ifeoma: Don’t honey me, just don’t. Christy told me everything.
Okon: You mean Christy your friend?
Ifeoma: Yes I mean my friend and your ex-fiancé.
Okon: What Christy are you referring to?
Ifeoma: I’m referring to Christy Obiageli Chukwuka.
Okon: Eh! Christy? Wait oh, what exactly are you trying to say? She told you about the marriage stuff.
Ifeoma: Yes she did (crying). She even told me that she tried to take you away from me because she really loved you!
Okon: Ify! Please don’t cry. I can explain everything to you.
Ifeoma: What’s there to explain? Because of you, Christy used a charm to separate both of us. It’s not her fault, she was doing it because she loved you. If not for my great love for you Okon, I would have divorced you a long time ago. (She goes to the bedroom and Okon followed her to apologize).
Okon: Look, Ify, I’m sorry. I left her because she didn’t have the characters I saw in you. You are smart, intelligent, beautiful, lovely and softhearted. I chose you because Christy only character was to give a man what he wants. Yes! I knew that I made a mistake in the past. I didn’t tell you during our courtship but now you know so please forgive me.
Ifeoma: That’s all I wanted to hear. I forgive you.
Okon: (Excited) yes, but please promise me that no matter what happens you won’t use the word “divorce” again.
Ifeoma: Dear, you know I can’t make a promise but I’ll try to do so. Goodnight dear.
Okon: Goodnight.
Ifeoma: (In her dream, God revealed to her that it was her mother’s spirit who possessed Christy to snatch Okon from her and the only way to re-incarnate her back to her grave is to go on 7days fasting and praying). (She tells Okon in the morning).
Okon: So it’s your mother’s doing again right. Okay do what the Lord revealed to you.
Fade out.
Chapter 3
Ifeoma and her family
After three years Ifeoma gives birth to three lovely children named: Nse, Itoro and Ini.
Okon: Thank you Jesus, my wife has given birth to children. Now I can be a father.
Ifeoma: I thank you Jesus. If not for what you revealed to me (crying) I would have not had children.
Okon: Ify, we have won the battle. Victory is ours.
Ifeoma: Okon my love I’m tired and exhausted. Can we go to bed?
Okon: Dear, let’s go to bed then. But have you taken your drugs?
Ifeoma: Of course, I’ve taken them. (They go to bed, she dreamt her father and Okon’s father caused her two children: Nse and Itoro to die but Ini brings joy to her family). Next morning she tells her husband the dream.
