The disquiet amongst eminent political stakeholders across the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Delta State, as a result of the muttering disagreement between Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa and the founding father of PDP in the state, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, over will succeed Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa as governor of the State, come May 29, 2023, may favour the gubernatorial ambition of the Deputy Senate President, Rt. Hon. (Obarisi) Ovie Omo-Agege, of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Though, there have been no open endorsement of Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Fresh Angle International has scooped from very close associates of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s prominent political foot-soldiers, that the Ika North-East born Delta State Governor, has actually settled for Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori as his successor, a move that is at variance with Chief James Ibori’s choice, Chief David Edevbie.
Interestingly, just as Chief David Edevbie, the political history of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and the Deputy Senate President, Rt. Hon. Ovie Omo-Agege, are traced to Chief James Ibori, who arguably founded the PDP in Delta State.
There are indications that Governor Okowa, eventually settled for Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, with the permutation that he would easily leverage on his position as Speaker of the State House of Assembly and get total support of current members of the State Assembly, who are automatic delegates in the impending gubernatorial primary of the PDP.
Whilst Dr. Okowa’s alleged political calculations as it affects the choice of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori as his successor, appears a master-stroke, Governor Okowa, may have to effectively manage the pressure of serving local government chairmen in the state, who are bent on contesting House of Assembly Seats of their constituencies, against the current House of Assembly members, most of whom are determined to return to the State Legislature next year.
The impending political confrontation between the incumbent State House of Assembly members and aspiring Local Government Chairmen, has the potential of rocking the gubernatorial ambition of Governor Okowa’s alleged choice, Rt. Hon. Oborevwori and create windows for Chief Ibori’s David Edevbie to put up strong showing in the PDP governorship primary. It may ultimately favour the gubernatorial ambition of Rt. Hon. Ovie Omo-Agege of the APC.
Comments extracted from political watchers by Fresh Angle International in the last one week, indicate that should Governor Ifeanyi Okowa succeeds to produce the Delta State PDP governorship candidate against Chief Ibori’s preference, core-loyalists and supporters of the former Delta State Governor, often called Odidigboigbo of Africa, may back the governorship ambition of Rt. Hon. Omo-Agege and set the stage for what would become the first governorship battle royale in Delta State.
