NAIS alleges neglect of Itsekiri Students in the award of NDDC Scholarship
President Muhammadu Buhari

The National Association of Itsekiri Students, NAIS, Worldwide, has alleged neglect of Itsekiri Students in the award of NDDC scholarship, accusing the Federal government and Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC of marginalizing Itsekiri Nation.

The Itsekiri Students’ body in a protest letter addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari and made available to Fresh Angle International, Monday August 29, stressed the urgent need for the Federal government to appoint an Itsekiri indigene as the Chairman or MD of the next NDDC Board.

Comrade Ighonmieyetan Ernest

The statement, signed by the President of NAIS, Comrade Ighonmieyetan Ernest, explained that the demand became necessary: “Considering the quantum of production as stipulated by the NDDC Act and the rotation on alphabetic bases, that presently favours Delta State, to produce the next Chairman or MD of the NDDC”.

Ighonmieyetan, stated: “As the highest crude oil producing ethnic Nationality in Delta State, it is only fair that an Itsekiri man is made the Chairman of the NDDC, for the first time, to give the Itsekiri Nation, a sense of belonging in the polity.

Some members of NAIS, during a recent meeting of the association

“Mr. President, should take a critical look into the said issues, whilst constituting the NDDC Board, because the Itsekiri Nation, has always remained major contributor to the unity and prosperity of the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole. No Itsekiri, No NDDC

“Mr. President, should wade in and put a lasting positive end to the current indefinite strike and the unhealthy face-off between the Federal Government and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, which has left a more painful effect on students, who have already spent a better half of the year at home, when they ought to be learning and advancing knowledge as leaders of tomorrow”.
