Contrary to reports by a popular online media that the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC spent N8million to purchase bags of rice, vegetable oil and honorarium as Christmas package for journalists and publishers/magazines in Delta State, the Commission has debunked the report, saying only N6million was approved for the package.
In a statement released by the Senior Special Assistant, SSA to the Managing Director of DESOPADEC on Media, Prince Orhomonokpaye, the Commission decided to give out the largesse because the media practitioners are partners in progress.
He stressed, “I wish to state that DESOPADEC did not approve the eight million naira (N8,000,000.00) as was reported in Sahara Reporters (sic) recently, but it was six million naira (N6, 000,000.00) that was approved by the Commission”.
Meanwhile, allegations and counter allegations are trailing N90 million allegedly given to Itsekiri ethnic Nationality by DESOPADEC for empowerment/Christmas largesse.
While the same amount disbursed to Isoko Nation through the Commissioner representing Isoko Nation in the Board of DESOPADEC was reportedly used for the purchase of tricycles, grinding machines, bags of rice and other forms of empowerment, the whereabouts of the money given to the Itsekiri Nation was still generating heated argument as at the time of this report, with some Itsekiri people insinuating that the money was used to pacify some leaders of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
