PTI Chief identifies underfunding as basic problem of tertiary institutions in Nigeria
Charles Ikedikwa Soeze

The Head, Academic and Physical Planning, A&PP, of the Petroleum Training Institute, PTI, Effurun, Delta State, Charles Ikedikwa Soeze says the basic problem of tertiary institutions in Nigeria is underfunding, even as he added that the negative influence of a corruptive and valueless political system, planning and implementation problems is as a result of policy inconsistency and summersault.

Soeze, made the declaration recently while delivering a lecture titled “Challenges of alumni associations in the sustenance of academic standards and human development” at the launch of N100m for the construction of alumni centre by the Delta State University Alumni Association, DELSUA at the main campus, Abraka.

He stated that underfunding led to the weakening of universities and other tertiary institutions, thus resulting in poor teaching and learning outcomes, diminishing research and consultancy traditions as well as questionable services to such institutions.

The PTI Chief regretted that the erosion of values that have produced a culture of under-achievements will take decades to change in our universities and other tertiary institutions. He called on alumni associations to contribute meaningfully to the development of their alma mater by joining forces with other relevant publics to raise the banner of their institutions high, just as he enjoined university administrators to remain transparently honest in the administration of their institutions.

Soeze who read mass communication from first degree to doctoral level specifically told the Alumni Association of Delta State University where he bagged his first degree in mass communication that they have an unequivocal commitment to DELSU, which is part of the pride and strength of the university.

His words, “Our Alumni Association should be seen as the movers and shakers of society, which should in turn look inwards to steer DELSU towards a renaissance in the 21st century. Alumni Associations exist primarily for the improvement of the conditions of their alma mater”.
The mass communication scholar cum professional public relations practitioner appealed to DELSU alumni to form bridges of partnership to reinvigorate Delta State University, just as he advised the university management to give the alumni a prominent role in the university committees as well as governing council.
