The hunger that pervades Delta Government House, Asaba reared its ugly head recently when some members of Governor Okowa media team had serious arguments with journalists immediately after Dr. Okowa’s chat over the N2 million largesse that was given to the newsmen.
But for swift response by some seasoned media professionals, the whole situation would have degenerated to a brawl, Our Correspondent reports.
Meanwhile, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa-led government in Delta State is set to reposition the State in economic growth, following the economic hardship that has bedeviled the nation.
Okowa stated this while briefing the press at his First Year Performance Report at the Press Centre, Government House, Asaba.
He said the very core of his SMART agenda was job and wealth creation as it was the only way to attain a sustainable economic growth, stressing that diversifying the economy through the development of non-oil sectors and provision of the enabling environment was the only way for enterprises and industries to thrive.
Governor Okowa noted that Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) of government were mandated to undertake projects that have inbuilt employment generating capacity.
Okowa also disclosed that from May 2015 to April 30, 2016, the sum of N546 million was disbursed to a total number of 3, 110 persons within the various micro, small and medium enterprises which includes 2, 052 females representing 66 percent of the loan recipients and 1, 058 males representing 34 percent, pointing out that the ratio was in compliance with CBN regulations that 60 percent of micro credit should go to women.
The governor assured that with enhanced funding and strong corporate governance culture in place, “the Delta State Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency is poised for more effective and efficient service delivery to actualize the administration goal of bringing prosperity to all Deltans.
Okowa said that the Job and Wealth Creation Scheme programmes has a total of 17, 173 private sector jobs, while 6, 800 are direct jobs and 10, 373 are indirect jobs of both skilled and
unskilled workers, while the remaining 9, 651 were created through projects, programmes and initiatives implemented through the various MDAs.
