Kogi State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Josiah Mejabi has called on senior lawyers in the country to be supportive of the nation’s judiciary for more effective administration of justice. He said as notable stakeholders in the temple of justice, senior lawyers, especially Senior Advocates of Nigeria, occupy such vantage position in the justice delivery system that their roles should also include being concerned with courts’ resourcefulness for efficient of adjudicatory processes.
Our Kogi State Correspondent, reports that the CJ made the remark when receiving practice books, legal textbooks and other stationeries donated to the Kogi State Judiciary by Asiwaju Adeboyega Awomoolo Educational Foundation at Kogi judiciary headquarters yesterday. In appreciation of the kind gesture of the founder of the foundation, Chief Adegboyega Awomoolo, SAN, the CJ challenged other senior lawyers in the country to emulate the learned silk in contributing to the growth of the Nigerian judiciary.
The books were presented on behalf of the donor by Magistrate Ojoma Haruna, a Deputy Chief Registrar at the state’s Judicial Service Commission, who said the donation was a redemption of the pledge made earlier in May this year by the Senior Advocate during the commissioning of a new Magistrate Court in Ponyon, his wife’s hometown in Yagba East LGA of Kogi State. Though not physically available during the occasion, she said the books were delivered in line with the silk’s promise to avail the state’s judiciary library and courts with practice books in his goodwill message during the occasion.
Receiving the books, the Hon. Chief Judge appreciated the legal luminary for being a shining light who is worthy of emulation by younger ones in the legal profession. He said Chief Awomoola has proven that he is a trail blazer whose path should be followed and a senior lawyer in the country who goes extra mile to see how the flaws in the profession can be corrected than criticizing the system unproductively.
In addition to the books, it was disclosed that Chief Awomoolo singlehandedly renovated and furnished the building housing the new Magistrate court at Ponyon including making available the residential building that accommodates the Magistrate posted there.
Justice Majebi further stated that the donor who is the current chairman of the nation’s Body of Benchers is a honest and humble pacesetter who “doesn’t wash the judiciary linen outside”.
“It is not wise to criticize your profession for some wrongdoings and believe you are a saint in that profession when you cannot proffer and contribute to the solution of such shortcomings. In this light, I consider Chief Awomoolo as a Senior Advocate of substance” he said.
He therefore appealed to lawyers in the country to continue contributing to the growth and development of the judiciary in their little ways so as to make the Nigerian judiciary the pride of practitioners, citizens and the nation.
While cherishing all the gestures, the CJ however reiterated that the favors done by the Senior Advocate or any other by any other person or organization should not be seen by the public as a means of perverting the course of justice in the state. He said the learned silk was particularly a highly regarded and respected senior legal practitioner who is ethically grounded in the profession and would rather ensure that the integrity of the judiciary is kept intact than bring it to disrepute. For that reason, he said the Magistrate posted to Ponyon is a workaholic who will as well not compromise but would continue to be diligent, dedicated and committed to his work and always act within the provisions of his ethical demands and any member of the public therefore thinking otherwise would do so at his own peril.
The presentation also provided the CJ the opportunity to advise all judiciary library users in the state to always abide by the rules and regulations of the library as he said the management of the institution would continue to jealously protect the books and their usage even as he also warned that all books’ borrowers must comply with the schedules of the borrowing.
In the same vein, all courts in the state were admonished on the proper care of practice books and other legal literatures in their care as the CJ noted that the rising cost of items in the country should be an indication of the high cost of knowledge contained in books and must therefore be properly safeguarded and preserve for generations coming behind.
The Chief Judge finally led the prayer for the donor to live long and enjoy good health with the grace to do more for himself, his country and humanity in general.
