The Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Dr. Salisu Usman Ogbo, said he inherited an institution where cultists are demi-gods terrorizing students and staff on campus 
 
 
Our Kogi State Correspondent, reports that Ogbo disclosed this on Thursday at a press briefing in Lokoja marking the commencement of activities in commemoration of the institution fourth combined convocation ceremonies.
 
The Rector disclosed that, this set of criminal elements continued to cause havoc within the Polytechnic environment before the institution management under his supervision curtailed their negative activities on campus.
 
According to him, the present administration in the Polytechnic succeeded in tackling the monster of insecurity, by fortifying 
 security architecture through effective intelligence gathering on the activities of cultists and other criminal groups.
 
While noting that the Polytechnic put in various measures to curtail the activities of criminal elements within the institution, and put an end to other social vices Ogbo said "These efforts have yielded tremendous results, including the arrest of some students and none students with guns and other dangerous weapons and illicit drugs while making attempts to enter the campus. 
 
 
"The security efforts and strategies also helped us to discover the notorious syndicate known as “Magic Centre” at Sarkin Norma where students were nabbed while writing examination with our questions papers and booklets. 
 
 
"You will also agree with me that the Polytechnic before now had deeply disturbing image issues bordering on negative reports and other threatening social vices.
 
" We also inherited an institution without a functional student hostel, deficient in ICT, polarised along ethnic line, untidy physical environment with dilapidated infrastructures and general indiscipline amongst staff and students.
 
"The Polytechnic also had dented image and severed relationship with relevant funding agencies due to failed contract and abandoned projects spanning over Ten (10) years.
 
"The Polytechnic also had outstanding problems of accreditation across virtually all programmes spanning nine (9) years as well accumulated problem of Convocation after several sessions of turning out students at the both the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels. To restore the lost glory of the institution, we introduced the 3R-Mission of “Repair, Reform and Restore” which we have been implementing frontally through consultation and committee system".
 
 
Ogbo averred that under his leadership, the Polytechnic introduced a number of measures aimed at strengthening the culture of academic excellence and improve the quality of academic services in the institution. 
 
He listed the measures to include Introduction of New Statement of Results Format and Fortified Original Certificate, introduction E-Examination/Results Computation/E-Payment, Strengthening Regulation against indiscriminate Production and Sales of Textbooks on the Campus, Introduction of the Academic Board Central Results Verification Committee, Production of Maiden Annual Report for the Polytechnic, establishment of new directorates and units, implementation of 2015-2020 promoting and 100% Accreditation of 30 Programmes by the National Board for Technical Education, (NBTE).
 
 
Meanwhile, the Polytechnic Rector intimated journalists that, 249 Students would be graduating with distinctions at the 4th Combined Convocation ceremony.
 
He added that, 145 students will be graduating with distinctions at the National Diploma, (ND) level while 104 will be graduating with distinctions at the Higher National Diploma (HND) level.
 
"A total of seven thousand, six hundred and fifty-three (7,653) students are graduating with National Diploma in various programmes while a total of four thousand, four hundred and twenty-seven (4,427) students are graduating with Higher National Diploma in various programmes"he added.
