Recent developments in our polity have clearly shown that the nation is suffering from political stagnation, cynical geopolitical sentiments, dangerous ethno-religious consciousness, myopic sense of leadership and obvious political will to practice genuine federalism for fear of the unknown.
The emphasis of this piece however, is to x-ray the calls and counter calls for the establishment of State Police as a result of the growing insecurity in the country which is having negative toll on governance at all levels, particularly at the centre.
While majority of Northern governors have spoken vehemently against the establishment of State Police for reasons which include paucity of fund, their Niger Delta counterparts led by Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State have expressed strong support for the setting up of State Police. The position of these Niger Delta governors can best be described as hypocritical and smack of selfish political intentions, because they have continually canvass for increase in derivation money as well as monthly federal allocation to enable them meet up with recurrent expenditure and carry out infrastructural development.
The question that now comes to the fore is where will they get the money to finance State Police considering the dwindling monthly federal allocation? Or will the State Police be financed with the internally generated revenue that is largely unaccounted for? How then do we now believe that the call for State Police is not to intimidate members of the opposition, civil society groups and rights’ activists that seek good governance?
Until they account for the billions of naira spent as monthly security vote and deliver genuine democracy dividends as against media propaganda, Niger Delta governors should stop the hypocritical call for State Police.
