Iji kicks against retirement benefits for 1st Ladies

A former Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in Ondo State, Barr. Sola Iji, has faulted the call by Dame Patience Jonathan, wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, for retirement benefits for First Ladies.

This, the legal practitioner noted, will not augur well for the country, saying that it would set a bad precedence if the constitution is eventually amended for that purpose.

Iji, who doubles as the Chairman, ACN Governorship Aspirants Forum, opined that such could only happen if the position of the First Lady is contested for.

To him, “It depends on if the position is elected. I mean, who elected the First Lady? If we do it for First Ladies, are you going to do it for First Men?
“Are we not anticipating that women will one day be elected as governor’s, Presidents or be made Vice President? Are they not being elected as senators, counselors, chairmen of local government, members of the state Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives? Are you then going to amend the constitution again for First Men?

“What is reasonable is that the person who has been elected makes provision for his or her spouse and whatever belongs to him also accrues to the wife.

“What the First Lady is trying to do is that she doesn’t know that before the law, a man and a woman, once they are wedded, become one. And if she understands that, she can’t be separating that the president will have his own, the First Lady wants to have her own. It’s like dividing the house and we should not encourage it. It is unreasonable, unacceptable and should be discarded and discountenanced.”
