‘CPC/ACN merger talks, not feasible in Ondo guber poll’

The chairman, Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, in Lagos State, Chief Ajibade Emiabata-Balogun, has said the much publicized merger talks between his party and the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, will not materialize in the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State.
This is just as he debunked insinuations that the CPC is a regional party.

Chief Balogun who chaired the recently-held state congress and primary election of the party in Akure, stated this in an interview with newsmen.
The chairman posited that the party structures of both parties have not been involved in the talks so far, stressing that “there is no clear cut definition of the type of merger that we want to have”.

To him, calling CPC a ‘northern party’ is “an absolute misrepresentation of what CPC stands for”, adding that the party won some counsellorship seats in the last local government election in Lagos.

His words, “There is nothing like that for this Ondo election. We have produced our governorship candidate. Our candidate wants to win election. We want to take over government of Ondo State. And if there is going to be need before the election date for a merger or alliance talk, it is left for leaders of the party at the national level.

“As I’m talking to you now, there is no clear cut definition of the type of merger that we want to have; whether it is alliance or whatever because the party structure has not been involved. It is only the talk of the leadership of the two parties.

“But nothing stops us for convenience to go with any progressive party, not only with ACN. If we have any progressive party and it is a game of like minds and we know that we can together join hands to produce a good government, even hours before the election, we can decide on what to do with that party. And other parties can still come to us to use our platform to actualize good governance in Ondo State.”

On news that the party is a regional party, he said, “That is an absolute misrepresentation of what CPC stands for! As the chairman of the party in Lagos, I am part of the government in the grassroots of Lagos State because I produced some counselors in the last local government election.

“CPC is a party for change and for as much as we are able to have our people in power. We will continue to grow like the party is growing to be part and parcel of grassroots administration.

“So, the same thing is expected to happen in Ondo State. Now that we have authentic party officials in place with hard work and support from people of Ondo State, we will get to greater heights.”
