Host communities in Warri North Local Government Area have condemned the recent attacks on pipelines in the Olero-Dibi-Abiteye Fields and Flow Stations, disassociating themselves from the group behind the sabotage.
The perpetrators, claiming to represent the Niger Liberation Movement (NDLM), damaged critical petroleum infrastructure, including pipelines of 6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch diameters.
Hon. Aduge Okorodudu, former Chairman of Warri North, denounced the attacks as reckless, environmentally harmful, and a threat to local livelihoods.
He highlighted the damage done to the longstanding partnership between Chevron, operators of the facilities, and the host communities.
“These attacks are a deliberate attempt to disrupt the peace and collaboration we’ve worked hard to build with Chevron,” Hon. Okorodudu stated.
He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the culprits, stressing that the use of unrecognized names like NDLM reveals the perpetrators’ intent to exploit false narratives and sow discord.
Other prominent leaders also criticized the sabotage. Hon. Dr. Jeffery Wilkie described it as harmful and reckless, urging stakeholders to protect vital infrastructure.
Barrister Richard Omare, outgoing Secretary of the Itsekiri Regional Development Committee (IRDC), called for swift legal action against the perpetrators, emphasizing that such destruction is not characteristic of the host communities.
Comrade David Odeli, Chairman of Tisun Community, condemned the attacks as barbaric and a betrayal of the region’s future. “The destruction of Chevron pipelines is an unforgivable act of criminality that threatens lives, devastates the environment, and cripples economic progress. Justice must be swift and decisive to prevent further acts of this nature,” he said.
The leaders commended Chevron for its ongoing engagement with stakeholders and reaffirmed their commitment to peace and dialogue. In a unified stance, the communities disowned the perpetrators and demanded the swift apprehension and prosecution of those responsible.
