NUT to Okowa: No work, no pay threat is most unfortunate, undemocratic

The Delta State Wing of Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT has described the threat by Delta State Government to invoke the ‘No work, no pay policy’ as a result of its ongoing strike action as “most unfortunate, intimidating and undemocratic.”

The Union in a statement dated March 19 and made available to Fresh Angle International, averred that the position of the State government “remains unhealthy to the sentiment of industrial dispute of this magnitude/nature.”

On the insinuation by the Okowa led administration that secondary school teachers are on sympathy strike, the NUT declared, “to put the record straight, secondary school teachers in the state are not on sympathy strike with their primary school counterparts as being misconstrued by the state government.”

The statement which was signed by the Principal Assistant Secretary-General of NUT, Delta State Wing, Comrade Joe Iyalekhue, stressed that the 10-point demands of the NUT as it affects Secondary School teachers include: the continued refusal to implement inter cadre transfer, non-implementation of approved and released promotions as well as the non-payment of retired teachers’ benefits.

The Chairman of NUT, Warri South Local Government Area, Comrade Ishmael Ikuejawa in an interview with Newsmen in Warri, Tuesday March 21, dispelled speculations that members of the Union were interrupting the ongoing WEAC examination in the quest to ensure full compliance with the strike action.

He asserted that they have no issue with students and parents in their determination to ensure that the state government meet their demands.
