Breaking: Kogi Deputy Speaker resigns
Hon. Ali Akuh

The Deputy Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Ali Akuh has resigned, Our Kogi State Correspondent reports.

His resignation is coming barely one week after six lawmakers of the State House of Assembly elected under the Peoples Democratic Party platform defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

In a letter sent to the House and read by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ahmed Imam, Hon. Ali Aku explained, “after exhaustive discussions with my family, my party PDP, the critical  stakeholders from my Constituency, Omala Local Government Area, I have decided to throw in the towel, as the Deputy Speaker of the sixth Assembly."

Hon. Hassan Abdullahi (APC) Okura has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker by the House, following resolutions signed by 19 of the 25 members of the House.

There is also other shakeup in Principal positions of the Kogi State House of Assembly. They are: Hon. Prince Kolawole Mathew of Kabba/Bunu Constituency as Majority Leader,  Hon. Ahmed Mohammed of Ankpa I Constituency as Deputy Majority Leader,  Hon. Bello Hassan Abdullahi of Ajaokuta Constituency as Chief Whip, Hon. Muktar Adoke Mukhtar of Adavi as Deputy Chief Whip,  Hon. Ojo Godwin Osiyi of Ogori Magongo as Minority Leader, Hon. Oluwatoyin Lawal of Yagba West as Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Sunday Shigaba of Bassa Constituency as Minority Whip and Hon. Dr. Friday Alih of Ofu Constituency as Deputy Minority Whip.

Fresh Angle International can also report that the position of the Minority Leader in the House appears to be causing pandemonium, following a letter sent to the Chamber by the State PDP Publicity Secretary, Bode Ogunmola that five PDP members have unanimously endorsed Hon. Friday Sanni Makama as their Minority Leader.

But when the Speaker, Ahmed Imam read the letter before members, three out of the supposed five members whose signatures purportedly appeared in the letter withdrew their support.

Only the Former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Momoh Jimoh Lawal and the member representing Bassa Constituency, Sunday Shigaba stood their ground based on the resolution of the State PDP, while the member representing Igalamela Odolu Constituency, Hon. Friday Sanni Makama vowed to challenge it in court, alleging that the development was done under the influence of the executive.

In another development, the members of the PDP in the Kogi State House of Assembly have suffered another setback following the defection of Hon. Jimoh Musa Omiata of PDP to All Progressives Congress.
