The recent rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State brought relief to their families and the nation.

Yet, the incident also serves as a reminder that protecting our communities cannot depend on security agencies alone. It underscores why the principles of community policing must move from policy documents to everyday practice.

Community policing is built on partnership, trust, and shared responsibility. It recognizes that residents, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and local organizations are not mere observers but active partners in keeping their communities safe. When these stakeholders work closely with security agencies, suspicious activities are more likely to be detected early, information flows more freely, and threats can be addressed before they escalate.

The Oyo incident should prompt governments at all levels to strengthen community policing through greater public engagement, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger collaboration between law enforcement and local communities. Security is far more effective when people trust the institutions that protect them and are confident that the information they provide will be acted upon responsibly.

While the safe return of the pupils and teachers is encouraging, the ultimate goal should be preventing such tragedies from occurring in the first place.

Community policing offers that opportunity, not as a slogan, but as a practical strategy for building safer schools, safer communities, and a more secure Nigeria..
