Back Seyi Tinubu for Lagos Governorship in 2027, Ohanaeze appeals to President Tinubu, Igbos

Apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has thrown its weight behind the rumoured governorship ambition of Mr. Seyi Tinubu in the 2027 Lagos State Guber race, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Igbos residents in Lagos, to do same.

The position of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, was contained in an electronic statement sent to Fresh Angle International, Tuesday January 14.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in the statement signed by its Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, declared: “Mr. Seyi Tinubu exemplifies the qualities of a modern leader—progressive, young, and, above all, detribalized—a testament to the Nigeria we aspire to build.”

The group, added: “He possesses the vision, integrity, and capability to continue the strides made by the current administration under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. We categorically indicate that there exists no legal stipulation barring Mr. Seyi Tinubu from assuming the governorship role while his father, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, serves as the president. Such limitations exist only in the realms of speculation and misinterpretation, not in the fabric of our nation’s legal framework.

“The essence of our declaration is deeply rooted in the urgent need for a harmonious partnership between the Igbo community and the governing entities of Lagos State. It is paramount for every Igbo resident in Lagos to understand that our investments, businesses, and very existence in this dynamic metropolis are best safeguarded through proactive engagement with those in power. When we rally behind candidates who are committed to our welfare, we create a framework within which our interests are not merely heard but are prioritized.

“We would like to set the record straight: misleading narratives propagated by unauthorized individuals who advise against supporting the established political families in Lagos pose a tremendous threat to our community's existence and prosperity. Such missteps could lead to disastrous ramifications for Igbo businesses and properties spread across Lagos. History and contemporary events alike remind us of the importance of political alignment with those who hold the reins of governance—this is not just a tactical approach, but a necessity for our survival and flourishing.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo has observed a troubling pattern of systemic injustices faced by the Igbo in Lagos, often exacerbated when we are not collectively aligned with supportive political interests. We have witnessed political rallies forming against the Tinubu family, which includes unjust attacks on both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his son, Seyi Tinubu. It is incumbent upon us, as a united community, to lend our unwavering support to both leaders, thereby preserving our economic activities and fostering peaceful coexistence.

“It is with a profound sense of urgency that we, through this press release, appeal to Mr. Seyi Tinubu to utilize his position to advocate for the immediate release of Eze Igbo of Ajao Estate, Fredrick Nwajagu, who has been unjustly incarcerated in Ikoyi Correctional Centre since 2023. His release would not only rectify a wrong but would invigorate the Igbo community's allegiance to President Tinubu and Mr. Seyi Tinubu as they move forward into the electoral cycle of 2027. It is indeed a critical juncture for our people, and collective action on this matter can catalyze significant support for both father and son.

“We publicly call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fortify his support for his son, Seyi Tinubu, in his quest for the gubernatorial seat in Lagos State. By doing so, he will not only bolster his family's legacy but also honor the aspirations of the Igbo community, ensuring that we have a seat at the table of governance.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains committed to mobilizing the Igbo populace in Lagos to rally behind our shared goal of a prosperous and equitable future under the leadership of Seyi Tinubu. Let us stand together, united in purpose and action.”
