Amnesty International, AI Nigeria, has reported how a mob of youths on Tuesday set a man on fire for allegedly beheading a woman in the Otor-Owhe community, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.
According to AI Nigeria, the man was shot and then set ablaze by the mob.
In a statement, posted Wednesday January 29, on X, Amnesty International Nigeria, blamed the failure of Federal authorities to protect lives for the “growing escalation of mob violence over the last decade — and recently — as people increasingly take law into their hands and carry out so- called ‘jungle justice.”
The statement, noted: “On Tuesday last week, an aged woman identified as Kehinde Ojo was lynched by a mob in Oke-Ijeun area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, over an allegation of ‘witchcraft.’ She died on Thursday and her killers have not been brought to justice.
“The menace of mob violence is perhaps one of the biggest threats to the right to life in Nigeria. The fact that these killings have been happening for a long time, with few cases investigated and prosecuted, highlights the authorities’ shocking failure to protect lives.
“It is appalling that mob violence is gradually becoming the norm, often meted out in crowded areas, such as motor parks, market areas and busy roads. Victims were always tortured including by beating, stoning, or via the use of improvised weapons like sticks and metal rods.”
