Business

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Port Harcourt Operations Office, in collaboration with the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency (RISEMA), on Saturday, 11th October, carried out an on-the-spot assessment of communities affected by a recent flood disaster in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The assessment followed a distress call and a formal letter received from Hon. Bernard Ngbar, Chairman of the House Committee on Emergency Relief/Special Duties and Member representing Tai Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, reporting incessant rainfall for over three days that resulted in severe flooding across several communities.

In response, the Head of NEMA Port Harcourt Operations Office, Mr. Eric Ebhodaghe, promptly deployed a team of officers alongside officials from RISEMA to conduct the joint assessment of the affected areas.

Findings:

1. The flood resulted from continuous heavy rainfall lasting over three days.

2. Blocked drainages and water channels compounded the situation, preventing water flow.

3. Several farmlands were submerged, and crops were destroyed.

4. Buildings and properties suffered partial destruction from accompanying windstorms.

5. Some residents were displaced and are currently taking refuge with relatives in nearby communities.

6. No loss of life was recorded.

During the visit, the Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman, Mr. Ndam Joseph, who led the assessment team around the affected areas, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and NEMA for their swift response to the distress call. He also expressed optimism that the assessment would pave the way for necessary government intervention.

The assessment was concluded successfully, with NEMA reaffirming its commitment to continuous collaboration with state and local stakeholders in mitigating the impact of flood disasters and supporting affected persons.
