The Chairman of Kogi State House of Assembly Committee on Public Petitions, Hon. Bode Ogunmola, has uncovered employment and payroll irregularities in Kogi State Polytechnic following an investigation into a petition filed by one Abdul Hassan Sani, who alleged that his name was unlawfully removed from the institution’s payroll.
Presenting the committee’s findings at plenary, Hon. Ogunmola, who represents Ogori/Magongo Constituency, said all parties involved in the matter, including the Rector of the Polytechnic, were invited to appear before the committee.
According to him, investigations revealed that although the petitioner, Abdul Hassan Sani, was issued a letter of employment, there was no record indicating that he accepted the offer or resumed duty at the institution. Despite this, documents from the Polytechnic’s account section confirmed that he received salaries for about six months before being delisted from the payroll.
Hon. Ogunmola noted that a comparison with another staff member, Osho Beatrice who was employed at the same time showed complete documentation of acceptance, assumption of duty, and posting records, unlike the petitioner.
Speaking on the report, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Suleiman Abdulrasaq, expressed concern over how an individual with no official employment or work records could have received salaries for months.
He described the development as evidence of shady practices within the institution’s administrative system and called for stringent internal checks to prevent recurrence.
In his ruling, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf, commended the committee’s diligence, saying the report reaffirmed the importance of the 2015 staff screening exercise conducted under former Governor Yahaya Bello.
According to him, the screening exercise helped to sanitize the state payroll and eliminate backdoor employments.
Our Kogi State Correspondent, reports that Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf, commended former Governor Yahaya Bello for demonstrating the political will to carry out the exercise, a feat he said previous administrations could not achieve.
The House thereafter resolved that a formal letter be written to the management of Kogi State Polytechnic, directing it to address the identified anomalies and strengthen its internal control mechanisms.
