A CALL FOR STABILITY AND PEACE IN UGBORODO: A Collective Duty That Cannot Be Ignored

Date: April 2026

From: Ugbarajor Itsekiri Youths (Warri South-West Zone)

To: The People of Ugborodo and the General Public

We, the newly inaugurated Executives of Ugbarajor Itsekiri Youths (Warri South-West Zone), are compelled to address the ongoing conflict and unrest in the Ogidigben community. The situation has reached a point where silence is no longer responsible, and inaction is no longer acceptable.

Ugborodo, our ancestral land cannot continue on a path of violence, division, and uncertainty. The consequences of this crisis are already evident, and if left unchecked, they will only deepen, to the detriment of present and future generations.

We acknowledge, with deep sorrow, the loss of lives, particularly that of Emiko Onuwaje, whose untimely death underscores the gravity of the situation. We also recognize the widespread destruction of homes, properties, and livelihoods. These are not isolated incidents, they are indicators of a community in distress.

At moments like this, leadership must rise above division.

We recognize our elder brothers who are prominent community and political figures. Your influence within and beyond the Niger Delta is well established. With such influence comes undeniable responsibility. The current situation in Ugborodo calls for deliberate and visible efforts toward de-escalation and stability. History will not be kind to any leader who has the capacity to promote peace but fails to act decisively when it matters most.

As we speak to your consciousness, your composure and developmental outlook remain valuable assets in a time like this. The present circumstances demand that such qualities be brought to bear in facilitating calm, dialogue, and resolution.

This is not a moment for silence, neutrality, or passive observation. All stakeholders, leaders, and influential figures connected to Ugborodo must be prepared to make difficult but necessary choices in the interest of peace.

Let it be clearly stated: disagreements, no matter how deep, must never descend into violence. A community that resolves its differences through conflict ultimately weakens its own foundation. What is at stake is far greater than any individual or factional interest.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, Ugborodo risks being labeled a zone of instability if this trajectory continues. Such a reputation carries serious political and economic consequences. As a host to critical oil and gas operations, continued unrest diminishes our collective bargaining power with International Oil Companies (IOCs) and undermines our position under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). Division comes at a cost and we are already paying it.

Our Appeal:

As representatives of the youth, critical stakeholders, and for the future of these communities, we state the following:

• We are appealing for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities.
• We solicit the creation of a secure and enabling environment for displaced persons to return to Ogidigben without fear.
• We request all parties to submit to a, structured, sincere, and result-oriented dialogue.

We know from the above, that failure to take these conscious and harmonious steps will only prolong the crisis and deepen the consequences for all involved.

Ugborodo is home to respected leaders whose voices carry weight. We call on all our leaders to put sentiment aside and address this lingering cold war bedeviling our beloved Ugborodo land to rise to the occasion. At a time like this, influence must be used for resolution, not silence.

We must be clear-eyed about one truth: if Ugborodo fails, it is not one group that fails, it is all of us.

Peace is not a suggestion; it is an obligation.

The time to act is now.
