We encountered resistance, organizers reveal as Ugbomro FC wins 11th Olu of Warri Peace Cup

Organizers of the annual Olu of Warri Community Peace Cup, Iwere Sports Centre, say they encountered resistance marked as advice from certain quarters in Warri kingdom, in the course of planning the Olu of Warri Community Peace Cup for the past 11 years.

According to the organizers, some supposed communities questioned the process of selection, the choice of venues, and even the right of Iwere Sports Centre to convene such a platform, adding that at times the conversation shifted from peace to politics.

Fresh Angle International, can report that the Chairman of Iwere Sports Centre, Toritseju Samuel Igbiaye, made the disclosure Sunday August 23 at Nana Model College football pitch, Warri in Delta State, during the finals of the 2026 Olu of Warri Community Peace Cup.

Whilst stating that the Olu of Warri Community Peace Cup, belongs to the Olu of Warri and all Itsekiri people, Igbiaye, assured that they would continue to run the tournament with transparency, respect for traditional institutions, and with the sole aim of projecting Itsekiri excellence to Nigeria and beyond.

Igbiaye recalled how the 19th Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse II, graciously gave the tournament royal name and blessing, explaining that the Peace Cup, exists to honour the throne, to heal old divides, and to build new bridges. 

He thanked the sponsors and volunteers for standing with a vision that had no government subvention, noting: “May this tournament silence every discordant voice, and may the only competition we have be on the field, not in our hearts.”

Meanwhile, Ugbomro Community FC of Uvwie Local Government Area, have won the 11th Olu of Warri Peace Cup, defeating Ugbuwangue Community FC of Warri South Local Government Area.

The team from Uvwie, defeated their Warri South counterpart 5 goals to 4 in a penalty shootout, after an exciting goalless 70mins encounter, which was dominated by Ugbomro Community FC in the first half. 

The game, was watched by large spectators, including the Uwangue of Warri Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Awala, who represented The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.

Ugbomro Community FC, went home with the trophy and prize money of three million naira (N3,000,000.00) while Ugbuwangue Community FC, received two million naira (N2,000,000.00) as first runner up, leaving the third place team, Ugbodede Community FC with the cash prize of one million naira (N1,000,000.00).
