Warri: Eni Ogbarame, protects Ekurede people from premature death – Iyeloma

The Iyeloma (Mother of the Masquerades) of Ekurede Community in Warri, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, Ms Evelyn Ewowo, says Eni Ogbarame (masquerades) protects people of Ekurede Community from evil and premature death.

The Eni Ogbarame, which usually comes out every 25years, held Monday August 31 to Sunday September 6 at Ekurede Community.

According to Iyeloma, Ms. Ewowo, the Masquerade (Eni Ogbarame) is half human, half animal and it is the owner of Ekurede community.

Ms Ewowo, who spoke to Fresh Angle International at Ekurede Community, Warri, Monday September 7, explained that her ancestors and the Masquerade came to conclusion that if they want to live in the community, they must worship Eni Ogbarame and let people know he owns the community.

Whilst stating that Ekurede is over 500years old, Ms Ewowo, noted that the decision to celebrate Eni Ogbarame every five years, as against once in 25years, was to enable the younger generation keep track with the tradition.

An Itsekiri indigene, who is grounded in the culture and tradition, Mr. Tanrose Adidi, said Eni Ogbarame, also helps pregnant women give birth easily, before they enter labour room.

According to Mr. Adidi, the three masquerades that made cameo appearance Monday September 7 (a day after Eni Ogbarame ended) dancing to the Ekurede Junction, off the NPA Express Bypass, Warri, chase away evil and heralds the week-long Ipi masquerades in the community.
