The controversy surrounding the delineation of electoral wards in Warri Federal Constituency took another turn on Thursday, October 29, as protesters at Itsekiri Junction, opposite Cross Plaza along NPA Road, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to protect their cultural heritage and ensure democratic integrity in the delineation process.

The protesters displayed placards bearing inscriptions such as “INEC Do Not Destroy Our Heritage,” “INEC Must Protect Democratic Integrity” and “No Manipulation of Warri Federal Constituency Ward,” expressing their concerns over the ongoing electoral ward delineation exercise.

Our Abraka Correspondent, reports that another placard, which read “Itsekiri Is One Voice, One People and One Heritage,” highlighted the cultural identity dimension of the demonstration, with protesters linking their heritage to concerns about political representation.

The protest comes amid continuing disagreements among stakeholders over INEC’s fresh delineation of wards and polling units in Warri Federal Constituency. The Commission presented a new delineation report on May 20, 2026, following a Supreme Court-ordered exercise, but the process has continued to attract objections from different groups.

For the protesters, the messages displayed at Itsekiri Junction underscored their concerns about how the delineation process could affect their community’s identity and political representation.

Electoral ward delineation determines how communities and polling units are organised within the electoral system. Consequently, transparency, accuracy and public confidence remain important considerations in ensuring that affected communities understand the process and its implications.

However, the specific changes the protesters are demanding, the grounds for their concerns about alleged manipulation and whether they have submitted a formal petition to INEC could not be independently established as of the time of filing this report.

INEC’s response to the specific concerns raised during Thursday’s demonstration was not available as of press time.

The protest has once again drawn attention to the intersection of cultural identity, electoral representation and public confidence in the delineation process, highlighting the importance of addressing concerns through verifiable information, transparent engagement and peaceful democratic processes.
