Chairman of Itsekiri Oil and Gas Producing/Impacted Communities Development Committee, IRDC, Chief Ayirimi Emami says his leadership is poised to partner the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC and other developmental agencies to avoid duplication of projects in IRDC communities.

The IRDC boss gave the explanation in a chat with newsmen at Escravos, Warri South West during the commissioning of over 100 housing and training centre projects executed by the IRDC under Chevron GMoU.

While lamenting the poor government presence in the 23 IRDC communities despite their contribution to the nation’s economy, Chief Emami wondered why Office of Minister of Niger Delta Affairs is not situated in the Niger Delta region to enable the Minister better appreciate the sufferings of the people.
He disclosed that as soon as the update of the comprehensive report of his earlier familiarization tour of the 23 IRDC communities is completed, it will be submitted to Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, NDDC, DESOPADEC and other relevant agencies.

Chief Emami blamed the current stalemate between IRDC and Chevron on the GMoU renegotiation on the “equal opportunity clause” which states that people of the host communities seat for the same examination with other Nigerians on the issue of employment. He called for priority to be given to indigenes of IRDC communities on the issue of employment “as already being implemented by another oil major, Mobil”.
The General Manager, Government and Public Affairs, Chevron, Mr. Deji Haastrup in an address described the Commissioning of the projects as a significant effort towards realizing the Millennium Development Goals.

Mr. Haastrup who was represented by a team of Chevron staff led by Mr. Happy Apai disclosed plans to improve the current GMoU Model to enable the company improve on its ability to monitor and evaluate the impacts of the GMoU on the communities.

The Commissioner representing Delta State in the Board of NDDC, Chief Solomon Ogba, Chief Ayirimi Emami, representatives of Chevron and some leaders of the communities commissioned the projects which are mostly housing units.
