Sacked SPDC workers vow to continue protest

Workers who were laid off by Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, particularly in its Western Division have vowed to continue their protest if the estimated 1,500 workers dropped by the company are not reinstated.

They made the vow Monday November 26 in Warri during a protest organized by NUPENG branch of SPDC at the company’s main office along Ogunu road, opposite Federal Government College, Warri.

Speaking exclusively to Fresh Angle, the Benin Unit Chapter Chairman of NUPENG, Comrade Benson Uhunwangho, explained that before they embarked on the protest, SPDC management had promised to communicate with NUPENG National body on their demand, but they were surprised that nothing has been heard from the Anglo Dutch Company since then.

Comrade Uhunwangho vowed that the protest will continue until SPDC yield to their demands.

Two of the inscriptions in the placard carried by the protesting sacked workers are: “SPDC caused the death of Ogoni, now they want to cause the death of workers” and “SPDC cannot use and dump Nigerians like slaves”.

Attempt by Our Correspondents to speak with SPDC management on the issue as at press time was unsuccessful.
