Nursesin Warri Central Hospital are allegedly collecting N200 from out patients under the pretence of emergency before theyare attended to, Fresh Angle investigation reveals.

WhenFreshAngle visited the hospital recently in disguise, the nurses as well asmanagement of the hospital made patients, particularly pregnant women to waitunder the sun while they are being poorly attended to.

Thereason Fresh Angle gathered is as a result of some nurses who areallegedly collecting two hundred naira from other patients who do not want towaste any time in the hospital under the pretence of emergency. Whereas, someother patients who had come to the hospital earlier and in most cases not readyto part with the sum are made to wait even while it is their turn.

Someof these patients usually come in the wee hours of the morning, yet only a few areattended to.

Likeother women, Mrs. Maria Imhontor an out patient waited from 8am till 2pm andwas not getting any medical attention when one of the nurses came with hercolleague who was also pregnant for scanning, demanding that her allegedcolleague who came later be immediately attended to. Mrs. Imhontor who couldnot hold herself replied in anger, “I am a qualified teacher and a governmentworker also, tell your colleague to wait for her turn”.

Thisprovoked the nurse and a serious quarrel ensued between the teacher and thenurses. It took the help of a female doctor (name withheld) to salvage thesituation before Mrs. Maria Imhontor was attended to.

Someof the pregnant women who spoke to Fresh Angle alleged that out of 100%of them, only 2% are attended to on daily basis.

Investigationshowever reveal that the introduction of free maternal care by the Uduaghan led administrationhas increased the number of pregnant women visiting the Warri Central hospitalwith no corresponding increase in medical personnel, even as a few of themworking with the hospital are allegedly dedicating more time to their privatepractice.
