Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa says one way to outgrow poverty is by taking advantage of the various skills’ development empowerment programmes initiated by his administration.
Dr. Okowa, a former Secretary to Delta State Government and Senator, said in two years as Chief Executive of Delta State, his administration has been able to create employers of labour through various vocational skill programmes initiated across the State.
The Governor who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Government House, Asaba, Tam Brisibe made the declaration Wednesday July 5 at the College of Education, Warri, COEWA during a programme organized by two of his Personal Assistants on Students’ Affairs (Media) Comrade Ossai Ovie Success and Okoh Oghenetega Ezekiel.
He commended the Provost of College of Education Warri, Prof. Mary Edema for encouraging the students to host the programme christened, “Even a Professor Needs a Skill”.
Earlier in a remark, Provost of College of Education, Warri, Prof. Mary Edema disclosed that her vision for the institution was to make it centre for entrepreneurial skills among its counterparts in the country.
Prof. Edema outlined the vocational entrepreneurial skill programmes targeted to include agriculture, wood work, tailoring, business management, leather works and catering.
She enjoined potential investors to take advantage of the institution’s vocational programmes, saying COEWA is willing to partner members of the private sector to ensure the goals are achieved in-line with Governor Okowa’s SMART agenda.

While admonishing students who attended the one-day programme facilitated by the governor’s aides to practice what they learnt, Prof. Edema stressed the need for students to learn a skill as part of their course of study.
Our Senior Correspondent reports that organizers of the sensitization programme, Comrade Ossai Ovie Success and Okoh Oghenetega Ezekiel implored the students to leverage on what they learnt, even as they promised to take the sensitization campaign to other tertiary institutions of learning in Delta State.

Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori represented by Hon. Reuben Izeze, Factional Delta South PDP Chairman, Chief Emmanuel Amgbaduba and Nze Francis Onuora were among dignitaries that delivered goodwill messages at the programme.
