The State Executive Council, SEC of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Delta State Chapter has urged members of Delta State House of Assembly to vote in favour of Local Government Autonomy Bill in the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
The union’s position which is sequel to a press release after its meeting held Monday December 18 came on the backdrop of the Delta State House of Assembly deferring consideration on section 5, which provides for Local Government fiscal autonomy, but the House unanimously gave nod to financial autonomy for States’ Houses of Assembly as well as adopted the immunity clause for legislators in respect to words spoken or written during plenary or committee sittings.
The statement which was signed by Delta State NULGE President, Comrade Ziko Okwudi noted that Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly during the NULGE visit/meeting, allegedly gave support and promised speedy passage of the Local Government autonomy bill.
While congratulating Kwara, Benue and Adamawa States’ Houses of Assembly for favourably passing the Local Government autonomy bill, NULGE stressed that if Nigerians are really concerned about infrastructural development, security, job creation and overall well-being of the Nigeria State, autonomy of the Local Government would be made utmost priority.
The Union condemned what it described as “the monstrous and arbitrary dismissal of more than four thousand workers of the Unified Local Government Service of Kaduna State” by Governor Nasiru El Rufia, “without recourse to due process or laid down Civil Service Rules of disengagement”.
