Amid reports credited to Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel
Uduaghan that Warri Port is now the second busiest in Nigeria after Apapa Port,
investigations have revealed that the continuous patronage of Warri Port faces
a major challenge as a result of the perpetual bad state of the New Port Gate section
of NPA Expressway, Warri.
Some road users and Warri Port officials who spoke on the
condition of anonymity blamed the Federal and Delta State governments for
allowing the condition of the road which serves as major route to Warri Port
usually plied by heavy duty vehicles, Warri Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone, the
Warri Central Hospital, the proposed Warri Industrial Business Park as well as
the main entrance and exit to the Oil City of Warri to get to such a deplorable
state.
Investigation reveals that the deplorable state of the road,
particularly the section close to the Warri New Port Gate is caused by poor engineering
structural layout and blocked outlets where water from the road ought to exit
whenever rain falls. Structures have been erected in areas where water from the
road are suppose to exit from, while water gather at the middle of the road due
to construction of infrastructures by
some individuals and corporate bodies which makes the road slope towards the
middle rather than to the water exit holes constructed for that purpose.
Some road users and pedestrian who bare their feelings on the
state of the road which is key to the commercial life of the Niger Delta due to
the Warri Port location, commended the Delta State government for constructing
a stop- gap measure at the Ugbuwangue section to check the continuous flooding on the road and
enjoined the federal government to award the re-construction of the entire
stretch of the NPA Expressway, particularly the New Port Gate section to a
reputable construction company to save the road from imminent collapse as well
as increase commercial activities at Warri Port.
