Nigeria reports more deaths from Malaria in the world- Medic

A medical practitioner and Primary Health Manager for Warri South Local Government Council, Dr. Tosan Sagay, has described Malaria as a major public health problem worldwide, saying Nigeria reports more deaths from the disease than any other Nation in the world.

According to her, Nigeria accounts for 30% of the global estimate of 655,000 malaria deaths annually.

Fresh Angle International can report that Dr. Sagay who made the assertion Saturday June 8, at the Warri South Council Main Secretariat in Warri, Delta State, during the flag-off of the Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net, LLIN, campaign in the council area, posited, “Children under the age of 5 years and pregnant women are most affected, with its devastating complications of severe anaemia, premature delivery and spontaneous abortion”.

She noted, “Statistics by UNICEF reveal that mortality rate has fallen by 60% and the number of Malaria cases by 37% globally, as a result of the use of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets”.

The Roll Back Malaria, RBM, Officer for Warri South Local Government Council, Mrs. Clementina Akpomudje on her part, averred, “Malaria is still the cause of a large percentage of deaths in our society today, most especially in young children and pregnant women”, adding, “there is an estimate of 100 million Malaria cases with over 300 thousand deaths per year in Nigeria”.

Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Dr. Michael Tidi who was decorated as ‘Net Advocate’ in the fight against Malaria, urged every home in the country to make use of Long-Lasting Insecticide Nets.

The Council Boss emphasized the need for people to break away from superstitious beliefs and sleep inside Mosquito nets to avoid Malaria.

Vice Chairman of Warri South Local Government, Chief Divine Iniovosa, Leader of Warri South Council Legislative Arm, Hon. Kingsley Edaefeajebre, the council’s supervisors for Health and Education, Chief Linda Ikpuri and Patricia Edun respectively, Warri South Council Head of Personnel Management, Mr. Douglas Akambe, Chief Gabriel Awala, Chief Emmanuel Okumagba and Chief Albert Akpomudje, were among dignitaries that graced the event.
