Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan saysover 180,000 pregnant women have benefited from the free maternal careprogramme of his administration.
Governor Uduaghan made the declaration Saturday November 26during the annual lecture/maiden award ceremony of Warri Voice Newspaperheld at King George V Centenary hall in Warri South Council Sub Secretariat,Warri, Delta State.
The Governor who was represented by the State Commissionerfor Health, Dr. Joseph Otumara noted that his administration has greatlyreduced mortality ratio since the introduction of free maternal care.
While advising the publisher of Warri Voice Newspaper tosustain truth, justice and equity in its reportage, Dr. Uduaghan enjoined “publishersof community newspapers to shun propagating lies”.
Chairman of the occasion and Delta State Commissioner forAgric and Natural Resources, Hon. Misan Ukubeyinje in his remark, described WarriVoice Newspaper as a tabloid which has championed the course of peopleboth within and outside government. The Commissioner who has represented by Mr.Tonwe Ukuejuwayo, admonished the awardees not to rest on their oars but to seetheir recognition as an impetus to serve humanity more.
In a lecture titled, “service and commitment as indispensablefactors of development”, renowned Warri based medical practitioner, Dr.Omiwere-Ete George Boyo, identified oil boom, leadership and corruption asfactors affecting “service delivery and commitment to quality services”. Dr.Boyo who also owns a degree in Law, posited that despite the Nigeriangovernment identifying maternal mortality and morbidity as huge challenge,there has been no significant improvement in maternal health across the countrydue to factors such as inadequate laws and policies, prevalence of systemic corruption,weak infrastructure, ineffective health services and lack of access to skilledhealth care providers.
In his welcome address, Publisher of Warri Voice Newspaper,Mr. Femi Odonmeta, explained that the essence of the award is to spur therecipients to do more for the society as well as stimulate others to commitmore service to the all round growth of the country.
The Chairman House Committee on Finance and Appropriation inDelta State House of Assembly, Hon. Daniel Mayuku, the State Commissioner forOil and Gas, Hon. Mofe Pirah as well as Delta State NULGE President, ComradeDavid Ofoeyeno were among Deltans and organizations that received award ofexcellence in different fields.
