Allegations trail ex Burutu council chairman over sponsorship of sea piracy


There are strong allegations that a former Burutu localgovernment chairman (name withheld) is behind the resurgence of sea piracyalong the Burutu waterway.

Matters came to a head recently when the Head of Personnel Management,HPM of Burutu local government council, Mr. Adagbabiri escaped an ambush by the sea pirates in the early hours ofMonday September 26.

Report says Mr. Adagbabiri was setout for work on the fateful day via the route ambushed by the bandits when heallegedly received a call from the state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan forhim to attend the monthly Joint Account and Allocation Committee, JAAC meetingat Asaba.

Unconfirmed report says the banditwho were five in number had an intention of demanding a thirty million naira (N30,000,000) ransom. Having failed toabduct Mr. Adagbabiri, the pirates resorted to attacking a fully loadedpassenger speedboat traveling to Burutu from Warri.

They allegedly dispossessed all thepassengers of their luggage and valuables, including cash, mobile phones,jewelry and fuel in the boat.    

Fresh Angle reliably gathered that the BurutuCouncil HPM, Mr. Adagbabiri has since dragged the suspected pirates to Magistrate Court Iin Warri, Delta State.

Burutu, headquarters of Burutu localgovernment area is an Island accessible onlyby water. It is host to the newly established Delta State Institute of MarineTechnology.
