The Federal Government has been called upon to payvigorous attention to education, research and development meshed in highstandards and rigorous curriculum to overcome years of low educational qualityin the country.

Charles Ikedikwa Soeze, President of the University ofNigeria Alumni Association (UNAA) Warri Branch made the statement in hiswelcome address at an end of year party organized by UNAA Warri recently atIshaka Hotel, Refinery Road,Effurun, Delta State.

According to the mass communications scholar cumprofessional public relations practitioner, to promote equal opportunity andrid the country of poverty, quality education should be at least at the heartof such effort. He noted that perhaps more indicative of the economic value ofeducation is the high productivity and earning power of workers with qualityeducation.

Soeze pointed out that the appalling state ofeducation in Nigeriacould be ameliorated if consistent and sustainable corrective measures aretaken with long-term planning and monitoring immediately by the FederalMinistry of Education.

The President made it abundantly clear that educationis one of the most important factors that not only sustain the culture,including democratic principles, but it empowers an individual and determineshis/her worth in a competitive economy. He added that the essence of aqualitative education in a burgeoning democracy is imperative particularly in aglobal economy. As a result, he said that education is both a tool of socialjustice as well as a fundamental driver of economic development.

The guest speaker, Dr. Ogaga Okuyade spoke extensivelyon “global consumerism, memory, African identity and cultural experience”.

Many personalities including Barrister (Sir) CaseleyOmon-Irabor, human rights activist and people’s lawyer was Chairman of theceremony, Mrs. Bola Otumara, Arc. (Barr) James Akporero, Dr. Helen Ajuar, vicepresident UNAA Warri among many others graced the occasion.
