A Non-Governmental Organization, Child Protection Network has accused the Oshiomhole led Edo State Government of deliberately refusing to implement the court judgment that grant some independence to judicial workers, which has led to the almost three months strike, thus increasing the number of minors that is currently denied justice .
Coordinator of the group, Jenifer Ero in an interview during a peaceful protest to the Edo State Ministry of Justice, the State NUJ Secretariat and later to the State Government House, said some rapists in the State are being granted bail. “Oshiomhole should grant the court full autonomy because over 200 cases are pending in courts and over 100 cases are still with the police yet to be taken to court, we know that justice delayed is justice denied. After three months all these cases will be crashed and they will not be able to charge it to court, prompting the rapists to go on rampage”, she averred.
Our Benin City Correspondent reports that though the State Commissioner of Justice and Attorney-General was not in his office to explain the government position on the issue, but leader of the protesters told Newsmen that she had written to the Commissioner just once and was yet to meet with him for dialogue.
The Edo Police Public Relations Officer could not be reached as at press time to ascertain if rapists in the State on detention were granted bail, but the group’s coordinator advised the Edo State Government to take a cue from neighbouring Delta, Lagos and other State Governments which have implemented the court judgment, that grant autonomy to judiciary workers.
