The Principal of Hussey College Warri, Mr. Akra Sylvester said the reintroduction of Senior School Certificate Examination, SSCE fees by the Delta State Government is a welcome development as it will enable the students to sit-up academically.
Sylvester disclosed this in a chat with Newsmen in his office recently, that most of the students have abused the exercise as they no longer study their books because the money is not coming from them nor their parents’ pockets, adding, the parents do not help matters as they fail to inculcate reading culture in their children to enable government derive the benefits of paying for them. He said, “you see, because enrolment is free, most students do not take their studies seriously”.
According to Sylvester, “the government saw it as waste of money, hence it reintroduced the enrolment fees”. Most parents are grumbling over this new development. He charged parents to inculcate the act of studying in their children, saying if the government sees the students’ seriousness, it might rescind on its decision.
It would be recalled that recently, the government of Delta State under Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa reintroduced payment of Senior School Certificate Examination, SSCE enrolment fees which was free during the Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan’s administration.
Meanwhile, the Principal of Uwangue College, Sir Leo Onogberie has appealed to government to release subvention funds for the smooth take-off of the new academic session as many of the infrastructure in his school as well as other schools in the State are in bad shape, saying for some time now, it is quite difficult to embark on maintenance on some of the dilapidated facilities due to the absence of subvention funds.
