OVER 115 cases of fire, 60 cases of flood have been taken care of by DSEMA


The Delta State Emergency Management Agency, DSEMA has set up a standard through efficient services for rendering first hand assistance to disaster victims, even as 115 cases of fire disaster, 60 cases of flood disaster have been taken care by the agency within four years.

Our Asaba Correspondent reports that the Delta State Commissioner for Special Duties, Barr. Ogwezzy Ernest disclosed this to journalists at the press briefing in Asaba.

Ogwezzy ,who supervises four parastatals including the Delta State Fire Service, State Emergency Agency SEMA, Christian Pilgrims and Muslim Pilgrims, Said the Bureau has provided welfare support and quick intervention for disaster victims.

He added that apart from imparting and sharing in the plight of victims of various disasters, the State government had set up camps in Asaba, Agbor and Kwale for internally displaced persons even as about 28 million Naira was disbursed to the victims of 2015 flood disaster.

He maintained that the Fire Services responded to all manner of distress calls, stressing that fire statistics from May 2015 to date showed that they attended to 794 fire calls.

The Commissioner also said that about 176 persons were rescued alive while 24 persons were evacuated dead. He estimated the value of property saved to be 8.3million naira.

Ogwezzy named some of their operational constraints to include office accommodation, inadequate funding as well as warehouse where relief material are to be stored.

On pilgrims to Holy Land, he said that the board has lived up to expectation.

He however regretted that 16 persons absconded during 2016 pilgrimage to Jerusalem, stressing that inadequate measure should be placed to arrest future occurrence.
