Governor Bello begins clampdown on Journalists, arrests publisher
Friday Ogungbemi

Report reaching Fresh Angle International says publisher of Policy and Lawmakers' Magazine in Kogi State, Friday Ogungbemi has been arrested by operatives of Department of State Security, DSS.

The Journalist cum publisher was reportedly whisked away five days ago allegedly on the orders of Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

The Governor was reported to have developed broken relationship with media practitioners in the state after his last medical trip which was done without formal notice was exposed by the media.

The arrest and controversial detention of Friday Ogungbemi by the DSS has sent jitters in the spine of newsmen across Kogi State and also attracted the annoyance of Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ.

The emergence of Bello as governor of Kogi State did not come without its own controversy, a position that was eventually settled by the Supreme Court to the displeasure of many Kogites.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State Council of NUJ has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the detained publisher, Friday Ogungbemi.

In a statement signed by its chairman and secretary, Alhaji Ali Atabo and Comrade Adeiza Momoh Jimoh respectively, the state NUJ called on its members to boycott the state government activities until Ogungbemi is released unconditionally.

The statement described the arrest and detention of Friday Ogungbemi "as unlawful and wicked", saying all efforts to make the state government order the release of the publisher have been fruitless.
