The Chairman, Delta State Chapter of Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, ISPON, Mr. Edward Ajobo has revealed that Nigeria is the only country in Africa that has enacted Safety Act.

Our Senior Correspondent reports that the Delta State ISPON Chairman made the revelation Friday April 28 at the Petroleum Training Institute, PTI in Effurun, Delta State at an event held to commemorate 2017 World Safety Day.

According to Mr. Ajobo, 317 million people die every year as a result of safety hazards, noting that it took the team about 30 years before the National Assembly passed the ISPON Act in 2014.

While noting that it is only ISPON that is allowed to regulate safety practices in Nigeria, Mr. Ajobo warned those who are not registered ISPON members that they face arrest and possible jail term.

He cautioned companies not having Professional Safety Officers to desist from patronizing quacks or face sanction from ISPON, adding that such companies should contact the organization for professionals.

Mr. Ajobo hailed Chevron Nigeria Limited, Shell Petroleum Development Company and others for adhering to safety standard at their working environments,

In his remark, the Principal/Chief Executive of Petroleum Training Institute, Prof. Sunny Iyuke promised bringing back the past glory of PTI, making it as one of the best in man-power development.

Prof. Iyuke accepted the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU offered by the ISPON Officials, even as he lamented that Nigerians are not practicing safety enough.

He appealed to all to report safety incidents in order to take proper measure to avert re-occurrence and stressed that he will make sure PTI generate its own income to take care of some things in the institution before government intervention.

The Secretary of ISPON and Delta State Coordinator, Federal Road Safety Corps Special Marshals and Partnership, Dickson Amromawhe advised the people and companies to keep data in order to avoid re-occurrence at every organization.

Mr. Amromawhe enjoined everyone to take issues of safety seriously in order to minimize occupational safety as well as other safety incidences.
