Christianity has often been described as life and not religion by gospel preachers in their bid to emphasize its sanctity.
The life of Jesus Christ on earth and beyond has no doubt underscore the essence of Christianity which preaches holiness and deliberate attempt to draw man closer to God the creator.
The imperative of Christianity like Islam amongst others is to groom honest leaders as well as check the ills of those in government whose ultimate goal is to provide bad leadership and loot government treasury.
It is quite evident from the foregoing that only a detached Christian leadership from government will guarantee the needed check our corrupt leaders at all levels of government need to redress their corrupt and evil ways so as to ensure God-directed leadership that will be the overall goal of every Nigerian no matter the religion or ethnicity. But it suffice to say that it is no longer the case as far as Christianity and the political leadership in Nigeria is concerned, particularly during the last general elections and the build-up towards the heavily anticipated 2015 general elections.
To imagine that gospel preachers have become polarized among party lines is most worrisome and disturbing. While the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN appears tilting towards the re-election of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in 2015, a new group, Forum of Niger Delta Bishops, which seems to have the backing of Rev. Matthew Kukawho like most Catholic Bishops have fallen out with the leadership of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor led CAN appears to be working with the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.
If this trend of Christian leaders’ romance with politicians is not checked, the main essence of Christianity which ought to provide veritable platform for God-fearing leadership will ultimately be defeated, while corruption amongst our political leaders which has continued to be-devil Nigeria’s growth will continue to soar with impunity.
The thrust of this piece though should not be misconstrued to mean that Christians should not participate in politics, but gospel leaders no matter the group or associations they belong should distanced themselves from political leaders at both the Presidency, governorship and local government levels so as to adequately check the apparent excesses and corrupt tendencies of the political class as the Nation gears towards the 2015 general elections in order not to send wrong signals to their flocks.
