The modern Burutu Port exports palm oil, palm kernels, rubber and timber from the surrounding areas. It also ships groundnuts and cotton from northern Nigeria and Chad; palm produce and timber from eastern Nigeria; and sesame seeds and peanuts from Kogi, Benue and Plateau states.
In 2005, the Burutu Port was purchased from the Federal Government, by a company called Akewa Group of Companies.
In 2019, NEXIM Bank declared interest to work in collaboration with Akewa Group of Companies to upgrade Burutu Port to a full-fledged port—to accommodate bulk cargo like limestone, coal and iron-ore.
