COVID-19: Stop approving use of Primary Schools for ceremonies, ALGON directs LEA Secretaries

The Association of the Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Delta State Chapter, has directed Education Secretaries of Local Education Authorities, LEAs, across the State to stop approval of the use of Public Primary School fields for all kinds of social gathering and ceremonies.

Fresh Angle International understands that the directive was a fallout of the monthly meeting of ALGON, Delta State Chapter, held Thursday March 19, at Asaba.

Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mordi Ononye, who attended the meeting, reportedly briefed the local government chairmen on, “the steps and measures put in place by the State Government, including the various teams set up to work with the Local Governments teams and referral centers established across the State.”

The State Chairman of ALGON, Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, expressed satisfaction on the level of preparedness of the Delta State Government, in curtailing the spread of the disease.

The meeting resolved: "Local Governments on the borders, particularly on the sea which include Ethiope West, Bomadi, Burutu, Patani, Warri South-West and Warri South are to work closely with the Ports’ Health teams and Security agencies in ensuring proper screening of persons in and out of those areas.

"Immediate commencement of wide spread community sensitization across the Local Government Areas on social distancing, personal hygiene, regular hand washing and avoidance of crowded environments.

"The meeting urged people particularly in markets, motor parks, churches and all other crowded places to adhere strictly to the new protocol of consistent hand washing and social distancing.”

Meanwhile, the National Association of Itsekiri Graduates, NAIG, has called on the Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa led Delta State Government, to immediately establish holding Centers in Riverine Areas of the State.

The President/CEO of NAIG, Comrade Edema Collins Oritsetimeyin, who made the call on behalf of the association in a statement made available to this Newspaper, Friday March 20, noted that while the Delta State Government should be commended for establishing holding Centers across the State: “It is disheartening that the Delta State Government did not establish holding Centers in the Riverine Areas, despite the fact that the area is full of Oil Producing Communities, who contribute over 80% of Delta State Revenue.”

According to the Itsekiri graduates’ body, riverine areas such as Ode-Ugborodo, Deghele, Oboro, and Ogheye Communities, should have at least one holding centre.
