CSO establishes situation room for COVID-19 in Delta

TheCivil Society Organization, Delta state has established a situation room to cater for the COVID-19 cases across the state as well as excesses of security agents against human rights during the enforcement order.

 

While launching the Delta Civil Society situation room in a press briefing Monday April 27, in Warri, the Co-Chair Youth Emancipation Movement of Africa, Akpobome Rufus Ibebe disclosed that the Delta Civil Society/Media-COVID-19 Situation room is in collaboration with active organizations in Delta and it is spear headed by the Social Action which is serving as an intervention to monitor and report responses of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

According to Mr. Ibebe some of the objectives of the situation room will include to monitor government policies and responses to COVID-19 pandemic, monitoring of the expenditure of the COVID-19 funds, monitoring of compliance with government policies and pronouncements as well as the impacts of same on health and human rights of Delta residents during the lockdown and beyond.

 

The Delta Civil Society /Media COVID-19  is also seeking Partnership with Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Delta state taskforce on COVID-19, Delta state ministry of Health, National Orientation Agency, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, National Human Rights Commission among others.

 

They frowned at some people of the state for not observing the social distancing in markets and other public places across the state despite the danger coronavirus brought to the country and state, they are appealing to Delta state government to stop arrest of people for having contrary opinion about the coronavirus in the state regarding the government policies and actions towards handling the COVID-19 pandemic in Delta.

 

Speaking during the briefing the Joint Secretary Delta State Civil Society, from Social  Action, Comrade Joshua Ghereje commended Delta state government for providing food palliative to people, he appealed to the state government to make sure when next they share food the non-indigenes should be extended to as possible.

 

The Delta CSO urged the Delta state government to make as urgent as possible to build and equip COVID-19 testing centres across the 25 local government areas of the state so as to show real commitment in the fight against the coronavirus disease and safe lives of deltans.

 

Other Delta CSO members represented at the press briefing include Co-Chair, Sonny Akaeze- Foundation for Non-Violent Social Change, joint Secretary Civil Right Council, CRC, Ughelli, Emmanuel Agbubi and Gabriel Omorere, CDHR/CRC, Warri.
