A University Don, Professor Christopher Dime has attributed poverty, lack of responsible parents and marrying of many wives as causes of violence and insecurity in Nigeria.
Professor Dime made the declaration at Effurun during a-three day lecture organized by Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC for selected Ijaw youth leaders.
The University Don while delivering the lecture, noted that some of the challenges facing the youths are lack of funds to set up business, broken homes and false marriage of female children to men they do not love.
He also advised Ijaw youths, especially those who do not have means of livelihood not to venture into marriage so as not to give birth to children who will become irresponsible.
Professor Dime who was a former Dean of Arts, Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State enjoined the youth leaders to avoid violence and make sure they continually promote peace.
In his remark, the DESOPADEC Commissioner representing Ijaw ethnic nationality, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro asserted that the programme is geared towards Delta Beyond Oil goal of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan led administration and appealed to the youths to take maximum advantage of the seminar to better their lots.
Also speaking, another University Don, Dr. Lucky Akaruese, from the department of philosophy, University of Port Harcourt charged youths not to see the 2015 election as “Armageddon”.
Dr. Akaruese described electoral violence as action carried out by stronger party, noting that the soul of the defunct National Party of Nigeria, NPN lives on and even now more sophisticated with “its reincarnation in the Peoples Democratic Party”.
DESOPADEC Chairman, Oritsuwa Kpogho in his address, cautioned those above 40 years to avoid parading themselves as youth leaders.
Mr. Kpogho explained that the programme is targeted at training future leaders that will take over from the present leaders.
