The recent political thuggery and brigandry exhibited by some faceless persons in Ika South, through the burning of a billboard bearing the picture of the Senator representing Delta North, Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, has continued to draw the ire of some members of the public, who have described the action as senseless and wicked.
Speaking to Ika Weekly on the ugly development during the week, a People's Democratic Party chieftain in Ika South local government area, Architect Paul Amechi, who condemned the action in strong terms, noted that those who perpetrated the dastardly act were the true enemies of Ika South, as their action has shown, having carried their mischief too far.
He wondered why anybody in his right senses would allow himself to be so used in such degrading and repulsive manner to carry out what he referred to, "as a shameless and repugnant act," which he said portrayed those behind it as barbaric and backward both in reasoning and intellect, in this era of modernization when people's efforts are geared towards decency and positive contributions to societal growth and development.
Describing the destruction of the billboard which was mounted at the popular college junction as unfortunate and regrettable, Architect Amechi called on the people of Ika nation to rise in unison in condenming what he termed, "the selfish and self-destructive attitude of some persons who believe that gangsterism and deception were the only way they can remain relevant in politics."
He stressed that anybody was eligible to run for any public office in the land, unless barred by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to which every Nigerian was subject to, adding that the attitude of destroying billboards or engaging in campaign of calumny against others was a shameless demonstration of acute moral bankruptcy, fatal social disconnect, unredeemable mental retardation and lack of clear political identity.
"The Nigerian constitution is quite explicit on the issue of the rights of the individual citizen. It is clear from the 1999 constitution that every citizen of the federal republic has the right to vote and be voted for, having satisfied every other condition.
These conditions are constitutionally defined and are also expressed in the electoral laws of the country. So, the commendable act of destroying people's billboard is evil and deplorable," the PDP chieftain stated.
He advised those behind, "such satanic tendencies" to desist as it was not in their best interest and that of their paymasters, warning that anybody who derives 'evil pleasure' in trying to pull others down, will in the end find himself consumed by the dire consequences of his evil actions, and noted that, " our actions and utterances must be guided at all times by the fear of God and undiluted clear conscience"
He equally called on the youths of Ika South to rise up and condemn the perverse act, saying that as future leaders they should jettison all manner of evil inclinations, and also not allow anybody, no matter how highly placed, to use them in trying to achieve evil, satanic and selfish aims
He reminded the youths that those who engage other people's children for anti social and demonic acts have their children studying in America, and queried why they do not use their own children for political thuggery and other mischievous engagements.
