Ace journalist of Delta Broadcasting Service, DBS, Warri, Comrade Daniel Oji has emerged chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Delta Broadcasting Service, DBS Warri Chapel.
Comrade Daniel Oji came out victorious polling 18 votes while his opponent, Comrade Timi Ebikagboro of the station’s sports unit had 16 votes in a keenly contested election held under the watchful eyes of the Delta State NUJ Council led by the state chairman, Comrade Norbert Chiazor.
The position of the vice chairman was overwhelmingly won by Comrade Elizabeth Nukpedi who polled 20 votes against her contender, Comrade Joshua Okpanefe who garnered 14 votes.
According to reports, Comrade Ese Omu won the position of treasurer with 18 votes, defeating Comrade Sonia Unobunjo by two votes. For the position of Auditor, Comrade Marian Nweke got 16 votes, losing to Comrade Peterson Itiowe who won with 18 votes. Comrade Azuka Chiemeke returned unopposed as financial secretary, while Comrade Nkem Nwaeke emerged as secretary without any contender.
During the election, the Delta State NUJ State Council Vice Chairman, Comrade Felix Igbekoyin explained that the open secret method used for the election was adopted to ensure a free and fair election.
The newly elected chairman of NUJ DBS Warri Chapel, Comrade Daniel Oji in his response thanked his colleagues for their encouragement and support, adding that they will not disappoint members of the chapel in their determination to ensure that the practice of journalism is given its pride of place.
According to him, “team work, dialogue and staff welfare” will be given top priority by his leadership.
