Despite refutal by Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, that its assets in the Abiteye and Utonana Fields, including the 16” Makaraba-Utonana-Abiteye Right of Way (ROW) has not shown any indication that the “oil sheen on water” in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, is from its Assets in Abiteye, Makaraba and Utonana Fields or from any other Chevron facilities, leader of Omateye Family of Bateren, Prince Moses Orubu Fregene, has contradicted the company’s position, insisting the Oil spill was caused by failure of one of Chevron’s facilities.

Prince Fregene, who spoke to Fresh Angle International this morning, Tuesday March 30 in an exclusive telephone chat from Bateren in Warri South-West Local Government Area, stated that the spill which started March 27, has continued to spread across Abiteye Field, destroying aquatic lives and further degrading the environment.

While calling for a joint investigation between officials of Delta State Government, Chevron Nigeria Limited, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA and leaders of the affected communities in Abiteye Field, to ascertain if the oil spill was caused by a third party infraction or failure of Chevron’s facility, Prince Fregene warned that Omateye Family of Bateren, Iye Descendants of Deghele and Benekukuru Communities, may be forced to shut-down Chevron’s operation in Abiteye Field, if the company refuses to immediately institute the joint investigation, carry out remediation and adequately compensate indigenes of the affected communities, whose aquatic sources of livelihood have been damaged.

Prince Fregene, also appealed to the Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA and other relevant government agencies to race to the rescue of indigenes of Omateye Family of Bateren, Iye Descendants of Deghele and Benekukuru Communities.
