Asaba Declaration: Sustain the momentum, Niger Delta Youth Leaders challenge Southern Governors

Youth leaders in the Niger Delta under the aegis of Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities' Youth Leaders' Council, NDENYC, have challenged the 18 governors of the Southern States in Nigeria, to sustain the momentum generated at the Asaba meeting, now christened, "Asaba Declaration", endorsing the 12 - point resolutions reached at the end of the gathering of the governors," which broke the barrier of political party affiliations".

The youth leaders were drawn from Urhobo Youth Council, Anioma Youth Council, Itsekiri National Youths Council, Isoko National Youth Association, Etsako Youth Assembly, Esan Youth Association, Bini Youth Coalition, Igbanke Youth Assembly, Edo Coalition Youth Association, Ijaw Youth Council, Ikwere Youth Assembly, Ndoni Youth Leaders’ Coalition, Ogoni Supreme Youth Assembly, Ikot Youth Assembly, Ikom Youth Association, Eket Youth Assembly, Oro Youth Association, Egedi Youth Movement, Oron Youth Association, Efiawad Youth Group, Efut Youth Assembly, Ibibio Youth Movement, Efik Youth Assembly, Owan Youth Coalition, Ekid Youth Assembly, Igede Youth Coalition, Annang Youth Assembly, Qua/Ejachim Youth Coalition, Bahuohno Youth Assembly, Boki Youth Movement, Bekwara Youth Assembly, Yala Youth Movement and Affiwad-Ekid Youth Movement.

The Niger Delta Youth Leaders in a statement issued weekend, after a meeting held in Warri, Delta State,  blamed what they described as  the lackadaisical approach of Niger Delta political leaders in the past as it affects contending National issues for, " the embodiment of Northern political leaders, to have taken us for a ride all this while".

The statement signed by Terry Obieh and Captain Bassey Henshaw, President and Secretary, respectively, of Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities' Youth Leaders' Council, stressed that the entire Niger Delta Youths are solidly behind the 12 - point resolutions of the Southern Governors.

While stating that their position was sequel to extensive review of the outcome of the Asaba meeting, the youth leaders averred that the necessary framework has already been set up by them to ensure full activation of the processes that would lead to the full implementation of the Asaba Accord.

Recall that key elements of the 12 - point Asaba Accord, include the ban on open grazing, demand for restructuring of the country, the need to address perceived lopsided appointments by the federal government and checking the incursions of terrorists from the Northern part of the country to the South.
