A governorship aspirant in the Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has assured the people of the State of purposeful leadership, if given the mandate to pilot the affairs of the State from 2015.
He gave the assurance at Kiagbodo in Burutu local government area of the State, during a consultative visit to foremost Ijaw national leader, Chief Edwin Clark at his country home.
Senator Okowa, who currently represents Delta North in the National Assembly, said he would pay particular attention to such very critical sectors as Health, Education, Agricultural and Industries to enhance the general well-being of the people of Delta State.
He stressed that efforts would be geared towards reviving the moribund technical education to give needed skills to the youths, revitalize agriculture and create agro-based industrial parks in the three senatorial districts, to generate employment for the citizens.
He said his administration will also embark on massive urban renewal, with the primary intention to decongest Asaba and Warri, which today stand as the two major cities in the State, and to also develop more towns, as a way of ensuring equity and fairness in the development of the State.
Senator Okowa, while promising to run an all-inclusive government that would impact positively on all Deltans, promised to involve elders and leaders of the various communities in the State, to sustain peace and create the enabling environment for sustainable development across the State.
“I am ready to partner will all stakeholders and with our President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, to move our dear state forward. It is very important we work as a team to develop Delta State” he added.
While noting that his governorship quest was not predicated on ethnicity, Senator Okowa called on the people of Delta State to give him their support, as he gets ready to embark on what he termed, ‘servant in service,’ to consolidate on the successes so far recorded by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, and his predecessors.
Responding, Chief E.K. Clark, who described Senator Ifeanyi Okowa as immensely qualified for the governorship position, advised all those aspiring to be Governor of Delta State come 2015, to sell their programmes to the people of the State, saying that the next Governor will emerge from a primary that would be conducted for all the aspirants in a transparent manner acceptable to all.
He charged all Deltans to disregard any rumour of purported endorsement of anybody for the governorship position in the State by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, warning that no aspirant should use the name of the Governor, to deceive the people of Delta State.
Chief Clark disclosed that when he heard the purported anointing of Obuh by Governor Uduaghan, he invited the governor to his house to confirm whether the rumour was true, but that the governor vehemently denied.
“However, I pointed out the consequences of him the governor or anybody attempting to impose a stooge on the people of Delta State. I also reminded him of what happened when he (Uduaghan) was imposed in 2007, and advised seriously against a recurrence of that ugly incident of the past as the people are only interested for Delta State to move forward” he added, warning that, ” nobody should take our people for granted again as any such thing would be resisted”
He said that there was no iota of truth in the rumour that Governor Uduaghan has endorsed Mr. Tony Obuh, saying that the Governor or anybody for that matter, does not have the capacity to impose a candidate on the PDP, or governor on the people of Delta State, adding that any such attempt would be stoutly resisted.
